Showdown Looms over Subpoenas

June 28, 2007 (LPAC)--President Bush is moving towards a constitutional showdown with the Congress by asserting "executive privilege," and rejecting the release of documents subpoenaed by the Senate and House Judiciary Committees in the investigation of the firing of the U.S. Attorneys. Bush announced this decision today. Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy responded that this refusal is worse than the stonewalling by President Nixon during Watergate. To add to the showdown, the Senate Judiciary Committee issued subpoenas today, to the White House, the Department of Justice, and the Office of the Vice President, for internal documents related to the illegal NSA wiretapping. The subpoenas carry a July 18 deadline.
