Ecuador's President Warns Oligarchy: You Will Not Defeat Us!
May 30, 2007 (LPAC)--Speaking May 27 in the province of Los Rios, Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa reported that he had received constant death threats, and that there are people who want to "take a shot" at him. Nonetheless, he said, the government and the people "will be united against the oligarchy" that opposes his project for the country. "The Fatherland belongs to us all," he stated."
Just two days earlier, Correa had warned of a conspiracy against his government, echoing charges of a coup plot against him made May 25 by former President Abdala Bucaram in remarks to the Gamavision news agency.
Destabilization and assassination threats against Correa are explained by the vital leadership role he is playing together with Argentine President Nestor Kirchner and other South American Presidents in setting up the Bank of the South. Ecuador's local financial oligarchy is also hysterical over his proposals to reestablish the nation's economic sovereignty and defend the welfare of its people. It is these financial predators who are behind the witchhunt against Finance Minister Ricardo Patino, one of Correa's closest allies, charging him with "corruption" in the management of Global debt bonds.
In statements May 25, Correa responded sharply to these threats. "[I don't say] this out of arrogance or vanity," he said. "Those who attack us don't understand the nature of our position. It's simply the case that in our vocabulary, the word subordination doesn't exist...No conspiracy can defeat the indomitable will of the men and women of this sacred land...No conspiracy can defeat this people, that proudly walks toward freedom. On the contrary, the government of the citizen revolution will know how to do battle with those enemies of history."
