UN Security Council May Vote on Lebanon Court Tomorrow

May 29, 2007 (LPAC)--US Ambassador to the UN Khalilzad (who is President of the UN Security Council through the end of May) and French Ambassador to the UN de la Sabliere announced today that a vote will be taken tomorrow, Wednesday, on a UN-EU resolution to establish an international tribunal on the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, and this resolution will invoke UN Charter chapter 7 implementation. They announce that a "sunrise clause" grace period until June 10 would allow the deadlocked Lebanese parliament to ratify the call for the tribunal.

Russian UN Ambassador Churkin objected to chapter 7 implementation, said the sunrise period was too short, and also strenuously emphasized that if the resolution were to pass, it would create an unprecedented situation where the UN would step in and create a court which had not been ratified by the parliament of the affected nation.

In fact, the intention behind creating the court is to destabilize both Lebanon and Syria, which are also two current targets, from a larger list of Dick Cheney's (see).
