Gulf Cooperation Council Endorses Nuclear Power for Desalination

May 21 (LPAC)--"The promising future of nuclear energy in electricity generation and desalination can make it a source for meeting increasing [regional] needs." This was the upbeat assessment of the Gulf Cooperation Council's (GCC) Secretary-General Abdul-Rahman al-Attiya, as he addressed the first meeting in Riyadh of the GCC's working group on nuclear energy.

The group of nuclear experts began its feasibility studies on the proposed nuclear program on May 21, and expects to present the results at the GCC's next annual meeting in Muscat, Oman in December of this year. Al-Attiya emphasized that the GCC's program will be totally transparent, and for peaceful purposes only
