Does 10.7% Approval Represent U.S. Decisions in Mynamar?

October 26, 2007 (LPAC)--During their two-day (Oct. 24-25) talks in Harbin, China, the foreign ministers of China, India and Russia discussed the Myanmar issue extensively. They all opposed the imposition of sanctions by the United States and EU.

"We believe the Myanmar authorities should be encouraged to engage in the process of dialogue, and the initiatives which the special envoy of United Nations Secretary General has taken should be encouraged... there should not be any sanctions at this stage," said India's Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

China exhorted the international community to adopt a more conciliatory approach, rather than confrontation on the turmoil in Myanmar. "Ultimately, the issue of Myanmar should be resolved by the people and the Government of Myanmar," Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said. The Chinese foreign minister said he appreciated efforts made by the UN and the ASEAN countries in Myanmar. Russia also said that sanctions would only aggravate the problems in the region.

During the talks in China, US lawmakers, led by Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-TX), sent a letter to the Indian premier Manmohan Singh asking him to join the international community in exerting pressure on Myanmar's military regime. How much say does the Congress of the United States , which has an approval rating of 10.7%, and is run from the top, by the fascists Felix Rohatyn and George Schultz, have?
