Tremonti: Globalization Robs Us of Hope

24 Oct 2007

October 24, 2007 (LPAC)--Former Italian finance minister and current deputy chairman of the Chamber of Deputies Giulio Tremonti said yesterday that globalization has "stolen hope away" from families, and called for "going back to the system that gave us secure, stable jobs."

"Those idiots, they used to come to us and say: `You have 10 million unemployed? Well, that's the free market.' Now, where is the free market when central banks intervene to rescue endangered banks?" Tremonti asked.

Tremonti is a supporter of LaRouche's call for a New Bretton Woods-style reorganization of the world economy, and an outspoken advocate of Franklin Roosevelt's recovery policies.

Speaking on the popular talk show "Porta a Porta" of the Italian national television Raiuno, Tremonti called on other politicians to get out of petty squabblings and face "the real concerns of the population: food price increases, home mortgages rising, unemployment."

"Once, decades ago, it was not paradise but people had secure jobs, could pay their mortgages, and in general had hope for the future," Tremonti said.

"Those madmen introduced uncontrolled capital flows, competition from low-wages countries, all at once! China, India. And what about the Euro? With the Lira equivalent of 1000 Euro, you could sustain a family; today, with those 1000 Euro, you cannot!"

The shocked host and a few other guests tried to banalize Tremonti. But, the first guest in the audience who was given the microphone endorsed him enthusiastically: "I recognize myself fully in the picture Mr. Tremonti gave," said a couple who earns 1,300 Euro a month, and cannot make it once they have paid their (rising) mortgage costs: "They took our hope away."

Tremonti escalated his attacks on globalization, saying "Those madmen have abruptly enlarged the European Union, and now they realize we are having a problem. They used food to produce gasoline, and now food prices are rising."

Tremonti then confronted the government with the fact that they have just reduced taxes for banks, "not for industries that invest, produce something--for banks! Then I propose the following: you want less taxes? Okay, I'll give you less taxes, but only on the condition that you restructure mortgage costs for your customers."

The other guest, PRC general secretary Giordano was caught so off guard that he said: if what you say is true, I will support your proposal tomorrow.

"There is no magic button," Tremonti said, "but I think we should go back to the system that worked. We need to go back to a system of secure jobs. Even the Pope said that. People need secure jobs to build a family." Giordano said he fully agrees with that, and the journalists and the other idiots could not reply.
