Italy Wants Cooperation With India on Nuclear Energy

12 Oct 2007

October 12, 2007 (LPAC)--Speaking at the Indian Council for World Affairs in Delhi, Italian Foreign minister D'Alema said that, "there will be a growing need of nuclear power for civilian use, including for environmental reasons," according to Corriere della Sera of October 11, 2007. "We have two tasks", he added: "We must increase the safety level of plants, introducing new technologies, and we must prevent that a possible revival of nuclear energy generates a waterfall of security problems."

D'Alema called for intensifying energy cooperation between Italy and India, two countries with a foreign dependence on energy. "This dependency could unleash either a deep rivalry, or, on the other hand, stimulate an intensified cooperation in our mutual interest. A closer multilateral cooperation among consumers could in fact reduce our dependency and intensify research and development of alternative sources. We need that for reasons of energy security and because of the climate challenge.... The climate challenge will induce a revival of nuclear energy, as shown in the agreement between your country and the USA".
