Going, Going, Gone-zales

May 18 (LPAC)--While Senators Charles Schumer(D-NY) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) plan a vote of no confidence on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales as early as next week, the list of Republican Senators calling on the Attorney General to resign is growing. At least half a dozen of the Senate's 49 Republican Senators have called on Gonzales to resign or be fired, including Senators Sununu, McCain, Hagel and Pat Roberts, and the number is growing:

**On May 17 Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN) added his voice to those of other Republicans calling for Gonzales to step down.

**Sen. Kit Bond (R-MO) went even further, saying that President Bush should fire Gonzales if he decides that Gonzales is doing more harm than good.

**Sen. Arlen Spector, ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said at a committee hearing, "I have a sense that when we finish our investigation, we may have the conclusion of the tenure of the attorney general. It'll be clear even to the attorney general and the President that we're looking at a dysfunctional department which is vital in the national welfare."

**Maine Republican Senator Olympia Snow also called for the Attorney General's resignation and Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina has said that he wants to see Senator Schumer's resolution before saying whether or not he will vote for it.

"The Decider" George W. Bush isn't saying what his decision is. In fact, although he was asked twice at a May 17 news conference whether he had personally ordered the Attorney General to go to then Attorney General John Ashcroft's sickbed in the intensive care unit of George Washington Hospital to pressure him to approve his illegal spying program, as former Deputy Attorney General James Comey testified this week, Bush refused to answer the questions.

When Gonzales returns from his trip from the G8 Conference in Munich next week will he still be Attorney General?
