July 1, 2008 (LPAC)--On June 20, EIRNS reported that a senior Israeli source had warned that an intense policy brawl had erupted in Israel, over the issue of Israeli preventive strikes against Hezbollah, and bombing raids against Iranian nuclear sites, including the enrichment facility at Natanz. The source reported that the Cheney circles in Washington have been putting tremendous pressure on the fragile Olmert government in Tel Aviv, to carry out preventive strikes Iran.
At the same time, the “war party” faction in Israel has been on an intensive propaganda campaign involving “official briefings” to British, U.S., and now United Nations officials about how Iran is covertly building a nuclear weapon. Among the top officials reported to have visited Israel to receive this briefing in the last 4-6 weeks are: Sir John Scarlett, head of British intelligence; Director of National Intelligence, Admiral Mike McConnell; Admiral Michael Mullen, head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; and Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Gary Roughead. The Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz reported today that Israel's Foreign Ministry Director, Aaron Abramovich, “secretly” traveled to Vienna, Austria, last week to brief selected ambassadors of the IAEA about Iran's weapons programs.
However, the so-called evidence being foisted on Congress and the public may be just as phony as the pre-war hoaxes prior to the Iraq war. For example, identifying Natanz as the site of production of "highly enriched uranium'' is just plain FALSE. IAEA inspectors are regularly at that site, and have confirmed in reports that there is no highly enriched uranium being produced there. Traces that were found several years ago by the IAEA were said by Iran to have been present on the centrifuges that were obtained by Iran from another country, and the most recent reports by IAEA instructors confirm that there is no evidence of diversion of low enriched uranium (LEU) from Natanz to any weaponization program.
