Hillary Clinton Pulls Ahead in Popular Vote

24 Apr 2008

April 23, 2008 (LPAC)--"More people have now voted for me than have voted for my opponent," Sen. Hillary Clinton said this morning on NBC television. "In fact, I now have more votes than anybody has ever had in a primary contest for a nomination."

Counting the votes cast in Michigan and Florida, Hillary has received 15,095,663 votes to Sen. Obama's 14,973,720, a margin of more than 120,000 votes, a statement on Hillary's website reports. The figures quoted are from "Real Clear Politics," which derives that figure by counting all votes cast for Clinton and Obama in states which have held Democratic primaries, including Florida and Michigan. Even adding in estimates of the popular vote in four caucus states which have not released popular vote totals, Clinton is still ahead.

"But of course, the votes in Michigan and Florida were official," Hillary said on ABC-TV this morning, "they were certified by the Secretary of State."

"I've said from the beginning I'm going to stay in until a nominee is selected," Clinton said on CNN, "and I don't see how we select a nominee until we resolve Florida and Michigan.... How do you as a Democrat expect to win in the fall if we disenfranchise 2.3 million voters who turned out to vote in Florida and Michigan? That makes no sense to me. That is not a winning strategy."
