IDF Preparing options For Strike at Iran Without US Assent

December 4, 2008 (LPAC)--This is the headline of an article in today's Jerusalem Post quoting an unnamed Israeli defense ministry official claim that "options" are being developed for a go-it-alone attack without coordinating with the US.

"It is always better to coordinate," the official said. "But we are also preparing options that do not include coordination." These officials claim that although it would be difficult for Israel to attack alone, it would not be impossible even without the necessary clearance codes that would allow Israeli planes to fly over Iraq.

The rest of the article pieced together previous reports of U.S. making it clear that it does not want Israel to go it alone. This includes the installation of the U.S. X ban radar stations in Israel which is now in operation and is manned by 120 American military personal. They go so far as to say that this enables the US to know if Israel launches an attack.

The Times of London reports on this article in today's issue which also does its own interviews of Israeli officials which down play the report.

"We could not risk an operation which would only partially succeed," an unnamed source told the Times. "That would leave us open to a nuclear attack from Iran's remaining weapons stock. Israel would likely need the support, the backing, of forces from a Western ally to successfully carry out the operation."

An unnamed Israeli Knesset member told the Times, "There is always the option of Israel going it alone. It just does not seem like a good option at the present time."

Another official is quoted saying, "There is still time and there is no need to rush into an operation right now. The regime there is already falling apart and will no longer be in power 10 years from now."
