Islamabad Condemns "Shameful" U.S.-led attack on Civilians

September 4, 2008 (LPAC)--Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi today said that the killing of some 15-20 civilians in an early-morning raid yesterday by U.S. International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) forces in South Waziristan, was "a shameful, uncalled for and unprovoked incident and innocent people were killed," Xinhua reported today. Qureshi told Pakistan's National Assembly that "Pakistan's sovereignty and territorial integrity was violated." He said that the coalition forces had violated the U.N. charter and clear rules of engagements. There is an established mechanism for the exchange of information "but that system was not used. These norms were not used. It is violation of the U.N. charter," he said. Pakistan, the Afghan National Army and the coalition forces had established the Basic Coordination System (BCC) along the Torkham border point for coordination and that system was also not used.

Qureshi also questioned the basis for the attack, in which "no important terrorist or high-value target" was killed. "Innocent citizens, including women and children, have been targeted."

Later, on Thursday, 4 were killed and 5 wounded in a suspected U.S. drone attack in the same area as Wednesday's attack.
