February 15, 2008 (LPAC)--Deutsche Post CEO Klaus Zumwinkel, a driving force in the privatization of German postal service operations in recent years, is now being investigated for tax evasion. His case is one of a string of managerial corruption, mismanagement, tax evasion and related scandals in Germany in recent months, and reflects the venal nature of those pushing privatization. Zumwinkel, who resigned today, was arrested yesterday on charges of evading one million euros in taxes. His case is linked to an investigation of tax-evasion schemes using LGT, the bank of the Liechtenstein ducal family whose duchy is a notorious offshore haven. Before his arrest and resignation, Zumwinkel was preparing the sale of Deutsche Post's 50-percent share of Germany's largest private bank, Postbank, where 15 million Germans hold bank accounts.
