MySpace, Video Games, and the Omaha Shooting: Preliminary Report

December 6, 2007 (LPAC)--A female friend of the ex-girlfriend of Omaha mall shooter, Robert Hawkins, said on KFAB radio this morning that she was threatened as recently as a month ago by Hawkins, who told her he was going to kill her and her family and burn their house down. As reported to LPAC by a local listener, the friend's father, who was also interviewed, said that his daughter had tried sending out MySpace messages warning that she thought something bad was going to happen at the mall and to her. She then received messages back saying that if she didn't stop sending out warning messages, that she would be killed.

The parent and his daughter also told KFAB that the Bellevue Police Department and Sarpy County Sherrif’s department did not act when presented with evidence, that Robert Hawkins was selling drugs at school and threatening to harm them.

Debora Maruca-Kovac, whose family took in Hawkins after her 17- and 19-year-old sons befriended him, told the Associated Press Hawkins had a drinking problem and would occasionally smoke marijuana in his bedroom. Hawkins liked to listen to music and play video games — "normal teenager stuff,"

A preliminary look at the shooting itself seems to show a level of shooting accuracy that could be developed by video game playing. Police reported that Hawkins fired 30 rounds of ammunition in a very short period. He killed 9 people, including himself, and wounded 6 others: a hit for one out every two shots.
