Iranian President to Address Arab Gulf Summit for the First Time

December 3, 2007 (LPAC)--In an unprecedented move, the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members invited the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad to address their summit meeting in Qatar's capital Doha today, Monday. The Arabic daily Al-Hayat reports that the decision to invite Ahmedinejad was taken by all the members of the GCC, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, amid a political agreement among them about the regional dangers that could impact their security and stability. It goes without saying that the dangers emerge from Dick Cheney's plans to bomb Iran, using nuclear weapons. Al-Hayat, also reports that this invitation comes in the context of framing a new security strategy for the region, a strategy that has been discussed and presented by the defense and security ministers of the GCC in the past months.

Inviting Ahmedinejad to such a summit shows an interest among these nations, who are close allies of the U.S., in avoiding such a conflict, and promoting a peaceful solution to the crisis created by the British and U.S. governments around Iran's nuclear program.
