October 23, 2007 (LPAC)--The Republican Party's neo-conservative wing is trying to defeat at least two incumbent Republican Congressmen who oppose Cheney's plans for war against Iran. They are Reps. Walter B. Jones (NC) and Wayne Gilchrest (MD).
The so-called Club of Growth, a neo-con economic group, is bankrolling the campaign of Maryland State Sen. Andrew Harris, as a Republican challenger to defeat GOP incumbent and vocal opponent to an Iran war, Rep. Wayne Gilchrest, according to Justin Raimondi in antiwar.com. The Club of Growth purports to be for "limited government," yet supports the unconstitutional surveillance measures taken to fight "terrorism" in the U.S., and the record spending on the Iraq War.
The Club of Growth is also meeting with Joe McLaughlin, a financial planner who is challenging incumbent anti-war Rep. Walter Jones in North Carolina. Rep. Walter Jones started out as a fervent supporter of the Iraq war, but changed his mind, and began to denounce the Iraq War vehemently.
Earlier in 2007, Republican campaign committees ran TV ads targeting Republican incumbents whose support for the Iraq war they deemed to be wavering.
