October 6, 2007 (LPAC)--Dr. Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the leading prelate of the Church of England, blasted any "deliberate destabilization" of the Middle East region, such as threatened attacks on Syria or Iran as "criminal, ignorant... and potentially murderous folly." Williams had just returned from a trip to Syria, where he visited Iraqi refugees. Referring to U.S. political advisors who advocate or advise such action, he told BBC: "I can't understand what planet such persons are living on when you see the conditions that are already there. The region is still a tinderbox." As for Iraq, Williams said that "urgent attention" is needed to stabilize the country and that the "events of the last few years have done terrible damage in the whole of this region." He added that many people "do not see the cost in human terms of the war which was unleashed."
