Congressman Dennis Kucinich Blasts Iran Counter-Proliferation Bill

September 27, 2007 (LPAC)-Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D.OH) released a statement on September 25 attacking the now passed HR 1400, the "Iran Counter-Proliferation Act of 2007." Representative Kucinich said that the bill would undermine diplomatic efforts with Iran.

He further stated that right now Iran has a working relationship with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He stated that the IAEA has an actively engaged team of experts that are closely monitoring Iran's activities. He cautioned that these inspections are important and it is equally important that the United States does not undermine this relationship.

The other forceful point that Representative Kucinich makes is that this is the first time the U.S. has ever designated a nation's military a terrorist organization. Kucinich was speaking of the provision in HR 1400 to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization. He said that the United States would be better served by high level diplomatic talks between nations to address concerns related to the Revolutionary Guards than broad condemnation and malign designation.

Representative Kucinich ends his statement by calling on the Congress to cease with the consistent usage of misdirected statements and misguided legislation, all of which fuel aggression. Instead the United States should engage Iran in high level diplomatic negotiations immediately. We need to create a new opening to Iran, not proceed with another war based on falsehoods.
