More Republicans Expected to Defect to Sen. Webb Amendment on "Dwell Time" Between Iraq Deployments

Sept. 15, 2007 (LPAC)--The time that U.S. soldiers and marines get between deployments is set to be a hot topic once again on Capitol Hill on Sept. 17 when the Senate resumes debating the fiscal 2008 defense authorization act. On Sept. 12, just after Gen. David Petraeus had finished his dog and pony show in Washington, Sen. James Webb (D-Va.) announced, during a conference call with reporters, that he would be bringing back his amendment that would mandate that for each month deployed, soldiers and marines get one month at home station.

When Webb brought up the amendment last July it fell four votes short of the sixty needed to break a filibuster. This time around, Webb believes that there may be a few more Republicans who will break with the administration and vote for his amendment. The New York Times speculates, today, that Senators George Voinovich (Ohio), Arlen Specter (Penna.), Lisa Murkowski (Ak.), Elizabeth Dole (N.C.) and Judd Gregg (N.H.) are all believed to be possible yes votes, though the Times also suggests that the Pentagon's opposition to the amendment may make it harder for some Republicans who voted against it, last time, to switch their votes.
