More "Nonsense" on Israeli Overflights

September 13, 2007 (LPAC)--Ha'aretz, reporting from a Reuters dispatch, quotes an unnamed US official on the Israeli overflights of Syria saying, "The strike I can confirm. The target, I can't. He then added that there was more than one strike. Another unnamed official called the reports of alleged targets "confused".

The earlier reports that the targets were an arms cache destined for Hezbollah, or a missile base, drew a strong response from Syria's Ambassador to the UN, Bashar Ja'afari, who said, "This is blah blah, this is nonsense, this is an unfounded statement. It is not up to the Israelis or anyone else to assess what we have in Syria. There was no "target" - they dropped their munitions. They were running away after they were confronted by our air defense."

Today's Washington Post joins the speculation claiming unnamed sources, that Syria was setting up a nuclear facility with the help of the North Koreans. This intelligence includes "dramatic" satellite pictures "restricted to a few senior officials under the instruction of of national security adviser Stephen J Hadley." The write that the source is mostly Israeli. But the last sentence gives the story away: "John R. Bolton, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and a critic of the administration's dealing with North Korea, said that given North Korea's trade in missiles with Syria, it is legitimate to ask questions about whether there is cooperation on the nuclear side as well."

The Israeli's continue to remain silent apparently leaving it up to the U.S. to take the initiative on releasing information.
