China, Russia, Reject U.S. Move to Confront Iran

Sept. 13, 2007 (LPAC)--Speaking Sept. 12 before the Board of Governors of the IAEA, China's permanent representative to the UN said that negotiations are the best way to resolve the dispute with Iran. The current situation regarding the nuclear issue is delicate, and could worsen if not handled properly, Tang Guoqiang said. There is an urgent need to boost cooperation between the two sides, Xinhua reported. Today, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu reiterated China's stand at a news conference: China welcomes Iran's deal with the IAEA "on unresolved issues about the Iranian nuclear issue,'' she said. "We believe that this will help restore the confidence of the international community in the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear energy plan.'' Also today, Iranian Interior Minister, Mostafa Pourmohammadi, was in Beijing for talks on the nuclear issue, Reuters reports.

The Russian response to the "tougher stance on Iran,'' by the U.S. and EU is similar, reports the Financial Times. Russia will not support any more UN resolutions, which the U.S. plans to put forward during a meeting the U.S. has called for next week, said a "senior Kremlin official.'' The official said there are positive "movements on the part of Iran,'' regarding the agreement with the IAEA. "We cooperate with the U.S. on Iran patiently, [although] it may be not as actively as [the U.S.] would like." The IAEA Board will meet again on November 22, when Iran must show compliance with the ElBaradei plan.
