Former Argentine President Carlos Menem Charged with Involvement in Illegal Weapons Sales

September 9, 2007 (LPAC)--According to BBC, former Argentine President Carlos Menem has been charged with involvement in the illegal sale of weapons to Croatia and Ecuador during the 1990s. His passport has been withdrawn and assets worth $120 million frozen to pay for any fine. Menem was allowed to walk on similar charges six years ago by a panel of judges mostly appointed during his presidency. He is accused of involvement in selling weapons to Ecuador and Croatia between 1991 and 1995. At the time Ecuador was involved in a conflict with Peru and Croatia was involved in the breakup of former Yugoslavia. The judge said much of the $37 million earned from the illegal transactions were spent in bribes.
