Behind Bush's Threats: Cheney Wants Strikes on Iran

Aug. 10, 2007 (LPAC)--With President Bush issuing almost daily threats against Iran, and a drumbeat of anti-Iran propaganda in the U.S. media, the debate within the Administration over its policy toward Iran has entered a new phase, reports McClatchy Newspapers in an article entitled "Cheney is proposing to launch airstrikes at suspected training camps in IRAN..." which is getting a lot of attention. Consistent with earlier reports, McClatchy reports that Cheney is proposing to launch airstrikes at suspected training camps in Iraq which are run by the Quds force, of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corp, and he is also arguing for military action against Iran if new evidence emerges of Iranian complicity in supporting anti-American forces in Iraq.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, and Secretary of State Condi Rice are said to be opposed to Cheney's policy. But the Administration has launched a coordinated campaign to pin more of Iraq's security troubles on Iran, reflected in Pentagon charges, for example, that Iranians helped plan the Karbala attack in January which resulted in the deaths of five American soldiers. President Bush has openly disputed recent statements by Iraqi Prime Minister al-Maliki and Afghan President Karzai that Iran has been constructive and helpful in their respective countries.
