New Korean Summit in August; Peace on the Agenda; Cheney Still in Office

August 8, 2007 (LPAC)--The leaders of North and South Korea will hold what is only their second-ever summit on Aug. 28-30, the office of South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun announced today. President Roh and North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, will meet in Pyongyang, Yonhap reported. This meeting demonstrates the real, fundamental progress being made towards war-avoidance in Northeast Asia. The meeting, arranged between the two Koreas in the context of the renewed Six-Party Talks of North and South Korea, China, Russia, the United States, and Japan, demonstrates what can be accomplished, if Dick Cheney is ousted, fast. Only five years ago, George W. Bush named North Korea as part of the "Axis of Evil" along with Iraq and Iran- Cheney's targets for war. But the sustained intervention of the leaders of Eurasia, especially China, has worked to avoid crisis. A sane faction in the U.S. State Department, led by Christopher Hill, has been working with China and Russia, and the two Koreas, to avoid war.

This February, former Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov wrote that the Six-Party talks were an example to the Bush administration, on how apparently "insolvable" crises could be dealt with, and this process is an example for working with Iran. Primakov repeated this strategic proposal on July 12, just before the meeting of the Dialogue "Looking at the Future," of senior Russian and U.S. leaders, including Henry Kissinger, with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

The other members of the Six-Party Talks - China, Russia, the United States, and Japan -have all welcomed the new summit. The US State Department statement says: "We have long welcomed and supported North-South dialogue and hope that this meeting will help promote peace and security on the Korean Peninsula, fulfilling the goals of the six-party talks. This is the result of efforts and discussions that have been going on for some time, and the United States was advised in advance by (South Korea) about this meeting."
