Leading Swiss Tunnel-Building Firm Shows Interest in Bering Strait Project

July 19, 2007 (LPAC) – A leading engineer at the Swiss firm, Lombardi Engineers, which has done an outline for the Gibraltar Strait tunnel, said that cross-border Eurasian Landbridge infrastructure development is very important and agreed with its specific peace-promoting aspect. He

Gibraltar Strait:
The Atlantic Ocean, Straits of Gibraltar, and Alboran Sea (the westernmost portion of the Mediterranean Sea) separate Spain on the left from Morocco on the right. Algeciras Harbor is the prominent notch cut out of the eastern end of the north shore of the Strait; the Rock of Gibraltar is the tiny arrowhead that separates the notch from the Alboran Sea. The Sierra Nevada, farther away down the Spanish coast, lives up to its name in this April scene. The difference in elevation between the Sierra Morena and the Guadalquivir River valley is highlighted nicely by cumulus clouds. Tangier, Morocco can be seen as a light-toned spot on the southern shore of the Strait, near the entrance to the Atlantic Ocean.
emphasized that in the case of the Gibraltar Strait, the tunnel project would create a basis for broader cooperation between Spain and Morocco, thereby eliminating conditions for tensions, which have repeatedly been fueled by neo-cons to poison relations between "Europe and Northern Africa.

The governments of Spain and Morocco have accepted the basic outline  worked out by Lombardi Engineers, but the European Commission is still rather reluctant to receive more than just a vague description, for the time being. The Gibraltar Strait tunnel for railways would be the western-most project of the Eurasian continent, whereas the Bering Strait tunnel would be the eastern-most project, and once completed, the three continents of America (North and South), Eurasia and Africa would be linked. Like the Bering Strait, also the Gibraltar Strait poses a challenge to the capabilities of engineers, but Lombardi Engineers, which have done work also on the Gotthard tunnel across the Swiss Alps, are optimistic about the feasibility of a tunnel between Spain and Morocco.
