Senate-House Subpoena Showdown with Bush-Cheney Stonewalling on U.S. Attorney Investigation

June 13, 2007 (LPAC)--House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.) today announced that the Committee had issued two subpoenas to former White House Counsel Harriet Miers, requiring her testimony and extensive documents from the White House respecting the politicization of hiring and firing of U.S. Attorneys.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) simultaneously announced the issuance of three subpoenas from his Committee, seeking the testimony and documents of former White House Political Director Sara Taylor, and another for relevant White House documents.

Rep. Conyers warned: "Let me be clear: this subpoena is not a request; it is a demand on behalf of the American people for the White House to make available the documents and individuals we are requesting to help us answer the questions that remain. The breadcrumbs in this investigation have always led to 1600 Pennsylvania. This investigation will not end until the White House complies with the demands of this subpoena in a timely and reasonable manner so that we may get to the bottom of this."

The White House had proposed that any further discussions on this matter be held in private, and not transcribed. Conyers refused.

Senate Chair Leahy stated, "The involvement of the White House's political operation in this project, including former Political Director Sara Taylor and her boss Karl Rove, has been confirmed by information gathered by congressional committees."

The Senate subpoenas require White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten, or the appropriate custodian of records, and White House Political Director Sara Taylor to either supply the subpoenaed documents to the Senate Committee by June 28, or appear to testify. Sara Taylor is further subpoenaed to testify in person before the Senate Committee on July 11.

Former White House Counsel Harriet Miers is subpoenaed to testify, with documents and records, July 12 before the House Judiciary Committee.
